Five Lighting One Members Named 2014 Showroom of the Year Finalists

St. Louis, MO

Finalists for the fifth annual Showroom of the Year Awards have been announced, with five Lighting One members among the 30 stores recognized.  Lighting One nominees include:  House of Lights, Scarborough, ME; Just Lights, Nashua, NH; Gross Electric, Toledo, OH; Passion Lighting, Grapevine, TX; and Design Lighting, Surrey, BC.

The awards, which honor the top lighting retailers in North America, are presented by Residential Lighting magazine and the Dallas Market Center, which hosts the Dallas International Lighting Market twice a year in January and June. This is the premier buying event for the lighting showroom market, and Residential Lighting is the leading trade publication serving this segment.

During the summer edition of the show, which runs June 18-21, 2014, one Showroom of the Year will be named in each of three dollar-volume categories (annual revenue under $2 million, revenue under $5 million, and $5 million and over) from a field of 10 finalists in that category. All finalists are also eligible for three specialty awards: including Outstanding Merchandising Display, Exceptional Community Involvement and Social Media Star.

For the second year in a row, 50 percent of the scoring for the Social Media Star Award will be determined by “likes” posted to finalist profiles within the Showroom of the Year Social Media Star Event on Residential Lighting magazine’s Facebook page through May 19. ( Official judges’ scores complete the remaining 50 percent of scoring for that category.

Three geographically diverse professionals judged the finalists and winners. This year’s judges were visual merchandising expert Linda Cahan of Cahan and Company Retail Design Consulting, West Linn, OR; social media guru Leslie Carothers, CEO of The Kaleidoscope Partnership, Houston; and small business consultant Brian Moran, founder/CEO of Brian Moran & Associates, Ho Ho Kus, NJ.

All awards will be presented at an opening night reception on Wednesday, June 18, on the fourth floor of the Dallas Trade Mart (Loft 4 area). All market attendees and exhibitors are welcome to participate in the event with no additional tickets required.

Any independent lighting retailer in North America could enter the competition, and anyone in the lighting industry could nominate a store. Entries and nominations were received between Nov. 13, 2013, and Feb. 3, 2014. Entrants and nominees were judged comprehensively on a variety of aspects of their business, including merchandising display, marketing and advertising, customer service and engagement, employee education and motivation, and community involvement.

All of the finalists will be profiled in a special section appearing in the April issue of Residential Lighting. The section will also be distributed at the June Dallas International Lighting Market. Social media coverage before, during and after the awards presentation will feature the hashtag #SOTYAwards.

“Lighting retailers are working harder than ever to serve customers, from stepping up educational efforts that keep them abreast of LED lighting technologies to product presentations that prompt inspiring environments,” says Laura Van Zeyl, Publisher and Editorial Director of Residential Lighting. “What’s just as impressive is that they continue to contribute to their industry and communities in meaningful ways. We’re proud to partner with Dallas Market Center on a program that honors the best examples of brick-and-mortar lighting retailing in the 21st Century.”

“It’s an honor to partner with Residential Lighting and recognize the most prestigious lighting retailers in North America for the fifth year,” says Bill Winsor, President and CEO, Dallas Market Center. “We look forward to celebrating their achievements among the best in the industry during June Market.”
